What are we doing?
September 11th, 2001
- My condolences to the People of the United States of America and all those who lost loved ones in the attacks.
- My compliments to my prime minister. It is indeed of great importance particularly now to maintain vigilant where human rights are concerned, and not to Pavlovianesquely start bombing some bits of Afghanistan or to go and have some refugee camps massacred by the Israelis.
- Otherwise, I'm not surprised. I've been reading technothrillers for years, and it is not coincidental they were referred to by one of the CNN correspondents. Given the realistically possible scenarios, based on the current state of technology and fanaticism, religious or otherwise, it is nothing short of a Miracle that something like this did not happen before and I would have expected much worse (why no nailbombs between the fleeing at the moment of evacuation, why no aerosol ebola-likes sprayed amongst the crowds?). I was a cynic and those writers were fools: well, there you go. I hate being right.
- I agree with Benjamin Netanyahu (who, as prime minister, I perceived to be a dangerous fool). He's right. Crushing this kind of fanaticism and the states which support it is not a political agenda, but a matter of survival for democratic civilization. Next time they won't be aeroplanes - they will be biological and nuclear weapons.
- To George Bush (who, as a president, I perceive to be a dangerous fool), my wish for much strength and wisdom. May God be with him, and with the Americans.
