What are we doing?
February 7th, 2004 Search this site: And after that, much more important yet: watching Randy Newman, in The Hague, in the Dr. Anton Philips Hall, at the instigation of my wonderful sister, with Dad, Mom, Bro, Sis, Brother-in-law, and Aunt, this to my unspeakable joy in the added company of my good colleague John Speel, who suddenly turned out to be in the auditorium too. I first, and thus far last, saw that man (Newman that is), with and thanks to Stijn de Jong (the second greatest thing he's done for me) in Carré, Amsterdam, sometime in the nineties (I do believe, I'm bad at numbers). Newman is older and harder now. Then, it was "I'm sure Schubert would've written something like this" (about 'The girls in my life part 1'), now it was "Schubert would've wished he'd written something like this". And he delivered caustic criticism, of both the US and Europe and of, as always, himself. To be expected, but fabulous, to hear 'Sail away', live, at this moment in history. Greatest quote: "Lester Maddox died some eight months ago at 87 years of age, thereby proving once more... ..that only the good die young." That songwriting froglike little man still sings together a more acceptable world, if only for an evening: uplifting. |
